Day to Day Itinerary
Day One Arrive Denver
Guests arrive in Denver today by air or train. For guests arriving by train, our acclaimed hotel, the historic and stylish Oxford Hotel is across the street from Union Station in the popular 'LODO' area and as befits a relaxing holiday , our guests enjoy two nights at this superb hotel. (R)
Day Two Overnight Denver
This day we will tour the Rocky Mountain National Park with stops at several viewpoints and the visitor center at the top of the mountain (12,000' elevation). We will enjoy lunch (on your own), shopping and sightseeing in the beautiful town of Estes Park,Colorado,before returning to our hotel in Denver. Tonight is our casual welcome dinner at the acclaimed Wynkoop Brewery. Overnight at the Oxford Hotel. (B, D)
Day Three Colorado Springs
This morning we will travel to Colorado Springs where we will visit the Air Force Academy. Following our visit to the academy we will travel to lovely Garden of the Gods where we will enjoy a light lunch before sightseeing in this beautiful state park. You will want your camera ready. Here again, our guests enjoy excellent accommodations at the Embassy Suites with a two-night stay in this scenic setting. (L, R, D)
Day Four Pikes Peak
We will board the coach and travel to Manitou Springs for a spectacular ride on board the Manitou Cog Railroad to the top of Pikes Peak. Following our train ride we will enjoy some time for lunch and shopping in the town of Manitou Springs. Following lunch we will visit the U.S. Olympic Training facility in Colorado Springs. This evening we will enjoy a dinner and cowboy show at the Flying "W" Ranch. (B, R, D)
Day Five Royal Gorge/Alamosa
This morning we will depart the hotel and travel to Canon City where we board the Royal Gorge Route Railroad for a trip into the Royal Gorge. This awe-inspiring trip, considered one of the most spectacular scenic railway trips in the world offers a 24 mile round-trip through this magnificent chasm. We will disembark the train at the bottom of the gorge and ride up the incline railway to the top of the gorge where we will have time for lunch (on your own) and a visit to the Royal Gorge Park. This park includes an aerial tram, a zoo, shopping, shows and the Royal Gorge Bridge. Following our time at the Royal Gorge we will travel to Alamosa, Colorado, for our dinner and overnight stay in this quaint mining town. (B, D)
Day Six Cumbres Pass / Durango
Today we will travel over the beautiful Cumbres Pass aboard the legendary Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad. The train will make a stop at the top of the mountain before continuing down to Chama, New Mexico. Upon arrival in Chama, we will board our coach for our ride to Durango, Colorado, for dinner and lodging at the excellent Doubletree Durango.
Day Seven Durango & Silverton
We will check out of our hotel and board the Durango & Silverton Railroad for a ride by narrow-gauge train through the beautiful San Juan Mountains and San Juan National Forest en route to Silverton, Colorado, a stunning 45 mile three and a half hour ride. You will have time for lunch (on your own) and some shopping before boarding the coach for a ride over the Million Dollar Highway to the town of Ouray, Colorado, the Switzerland of America. This quaint Swiss village offers shopping, food, waterfalls and fantastic scenery set in a beautiful valley on the western slope of the Rocky Mountains. From Ouray we will travel to Grand Junction for an overnight stay in this charming town. (B)
Day Eight Great Western Limited
This day we will enjoy a scenic drive west to Provo, Utah and the renowned Heber Valley Railroad for a train ride through lovely Provo Canyon. We have included a spa visit with hot mineral pools later today as well as a very special dinner tonight before the highlight of our holiday. Saving the best for last, we board our own special 1940's era streamliner tonight, the 'Great Western Limited' for the passage west to Sacramento over the storied 'Overland Route' of the Union Pacific Railroad. Onboard, all guests enjoy comfortable Pullman sleeping car accommodations as well as a swank dining-lounge car. There is a grand champagne and fine chocolate reception to welcome guests aboard tonight after a fine dinner ashore in Provo prior to boarding. (B, L, D)
Day Nine Sierras / Sacramento
Today is a magical day as we travel over the original Transcontinental Railroad, passing Reno at breakfast before beginning our assault of the majestic Sierra Nevada Mountains. The names today read like the pages of an American history book: Stanford Curve, Donner Lake, Gold Run, Cape Horn and there is a special farewell lunch today before our afternoon arrival in Sacramento. Our hotel, the Holiday Inn in Old Sacramento is just a few minutes walk from all that this historic and fascinating area has to offer and is simply the best location in town. Here too, our guests enjoy a two-night hotel stay with time to relax and explore. The lovely State Capitol building is nearby as is the new light rail system that allows a trip to historic Folsom.(B, L)
Day Ten Sacramento
This morning we have included a trip to the spectacular and highly acclaimed California State Railroad Museum in Old Sacramento, without question the best railroad museum in the country, if not the world. There is a massive Southern Pacific cab-forward steam locomotive, a diorama of the passage over the Sierra Mountains which we traveled just yesterday, an original Super Chief dining car to tour and much more. This afternoon, there is a ride on the Sacramento Southern Railroad along the Sacramento River and tonight a special treat, our farewell dinner aboard the fabled 'Delta King' Riverboat, now docked permanently in Old Sacramento and the twin of the 'Delta Queen'. Overnight at the Holiday Inn in Old Sacramento.(B, D)
Day Eleven Journey Home
Guests may depart for home today by train or air or may extend their stay to San Francisco, taking advantage of our special hotel packages in the 'City by the Bay' that include travel from Sacramento to San Francisco by train, a short two-hour journey, starting at only $125.pp per night, double occupancy.(B)
