To Be At Sea

With the Fourth of July coming up in just a couple of days, I’m reminded of one of my first cruises back in November 1983. It might seem like an odd association to make but I’ll explain in a moment. I wanted to write about cruises today because while we have dozens of trips that incorporate trains and national parks, we have a great many that involve a cruise as well. In fact, we take almost as many people to sea aboard an ocean liner as we do to parks aboard a train. And if you’ve never been at sea before, it is an inspiring experience.

Second City Perfection

Here at Uncommon Journeys, we schedule departures for our trips from a number of places but more city than any other, we routinely choose Chicago. It’s often called Second City because it was, until passed by Los Angeles a number of years ago, the second biggest city in the United States. We choose it as a base for train travel because of its importance as a rail hub, the ease of reaching Chicago from anywhere in North America, and because it is a truly beautiful city with a host of things to do.
